[FIELD TRIP] THE EARTHSHIP APOTHECARY, SHOP + HERBAL ELIXIR BAR June 30 2015
After much success and buzz around their eCommerce business, Oakland-based natural luxury skincare line, Earth Tu Face, recently opened the doors to Earthship—the brand’s new retail space and apothecary studio. Located near the heart of Oakland’s beloved Temescal neighborhood, Earthship features products from Earth Tu Face alongside a variety other goods from local artisans that share the brand’s earth-friendly ethos.
Walking in, I was immediately struck with the space’s earthy, ethereal charm. Between the garlands of dried herbs strung between the rafters and subtle wafts of essential oils, you can’t help but feel you’re partaking in some sort of sensorial cleanse just by being there. The space gives off nothing but down-to-earth (literally) and humble vibes despite the more premium nature of the brands and products within it.
Earth Tu Face was founded by Sarah Buscho and Marina Storm, two herbalists who built the line based on the belief that you should never put something on your skin that you’d wouldn’t put in your mouth (yes, in theory, you can eat their products). Since then, they’ve maintained an unrelenting commitment to keeping their products all-natural and plant based—establishing the brand as a notable player in the burgeoning natural skincare category.
As I perused the retail space and tested just about every every available product, Madeline, the store’s retail manager, offered me plenty of knowledge around natural skincare ingredients and advised me on product selection. Admittedly, my depth of knowledge around skincare is shallow at best, so needless to say, I was impressed with her spot-on articulations of the uses and effects each product had to offer. I ended up purchasing the Toning Mist which I’ve been using an average of once every five minutes and forcing it upon curious friends (and strangers) any chance I get. It’s a refreshing, aromatic spritz that awakens your skin and gives it a dewy glow when things are starting to feel a little dull (it even helps to set makeup).
A doorway in the corner of the retail space leads to the apothecary studio. Jars of dried herbs, flowers and quirky trinkets line the shelves while the carriage doors at the front open up to invite in plenty of natural light and fresh air. The studio serves as the place where all of the line’s products are handcrafted (which is impressive considering their wholesale clients include big names like Net-a-Porter and Steven Alan). It’s also set to become the host of events such as herbology, botanical beauty and natural dye workshops (not to mention, Friday evening happy hours!).
All in all, it’s quite an impressive operation the ladies behind Earthship are running. If you find yourself in the Temescal area, the shop/studio is well-worth a visit (and your skin will certainly thank you).
Earthship is located at 4609 Shattuck, Oakland, CA 94609.
